After being hand-picked by the chief of police to work a serial rape case with five stunning and affluent victims, Detective Max Richards' life with Sami, the woman he loves, becomes complicated. They escape to his remote Colorado mountain cabin often to try and work the knots out of their relationship. But the case pulls Max back to his homicide job and Sami returns to her bookstore near city hall. Eventually, Max finds himself sitting in court at the prosecution's table beside Mike, a highly capable, but undependable assistant district attorney. With demons chasing him, it's questionable if he'll be late for court or bother to show up at all after regular all-night benders. The defendant has a prominent and flamboyant attorney that the ADA once worked for and this creates a palpable air of courtroom tension. Will Max win or lose this important case and will he and Sami work their problems out or choose to go their separate ways?
