The ongoing social, economical, and political disenfranchisement of Black people in the United States cannot be overstated. Since the abolition of slavery in 1865, Black people have been, and continue to be, either in law or in practice, subject to housing discrimination, mortgage discrimination, job discrimination, educational discrimination, police brutality, and exclusion from political representation. This prejudice has resulted in the cycle of poverty, mass incarceration, worse health outcomes, and limited social mobility for Black people in the US.
