In Book 4, Axora, a young Olmec girl, escapes from the long line of dirt haulers for the huge Grand Pyramid and finds herself wounded by a jaguar and lost in a bamboo forest. After being rescued by stone cutters and taken to the village of Two Waters, she is healed by a medicine woman who takes her to El Punta, the local shaman, for his opinion regarding her jaguar wounds. This leads to a surprising change in the teenager's life.
