When sixteen-year-old Ellie darts into a forbidden forest, it seems more like another world. The animals are not like any she's ever seen before, and they talk. While parts of the forest are beautiful, some are dark and dangerous. After saving her life, a grumpy old wolf agrees to show Ellie the way out of the forest. Along the way, the two form a friendship. Wolf shares the story how he and all of the animals had to flee their land because they were attacked. Now they're dying of starvation in a barren part of the forest. When it comes time for Ellie to go home, she can't. Wolf saved her life, now she's going to save his.
