Unaware of the dangerous forces that are pursuing him, Benny carves out a life that most teenagers only dream about. Creating an existence that seems relatively normal, Benny allows himself to think that he's hidden himself well and that every one of his secrets is safe. That is until he and his friends, Maddy and Baffle, witness the shopkeeper at Goodturn's Pawnshop doing something that no normal person could possibly do. Uncovering Mr. Goodturn's shadowy history, Benny is soon embroiled in several conflicts: trying to stay one step ahead of thugs who want to take advantage of his magical gifts, fending off bullies at school, and avoiding the dark thing that has followed him for years and has a knack of its own. While he's struggling with all of that, circumstances force him to decide if his secrets are worth protecting as he discovers a plot that threatens the lives of everyone he knows.
