The Sacred Hoop; Standing Apart from the Trees, is a new edition of The Sacred Hoop, with an introduction concerning the forty years since it was written. The book remains a work of historical fiction firmly based upon archeological and historical evidence. The book details the increasing alienation of western humankind from nature. The content consists of fourteen tales ranging from a retelling of Genesis, through the building of Roman roads, the prosecution of Kepler's mother as a witch, to the saga of the Steam God (the Transcontinental Railroad) in nineteenth-century America. Broder's introduction brings the chronicle up to the present moment when the planet is even more threatened than it was in 1979 and the hope that finally, steps will be taken to save the life-sphere that supports all species.
