In His Own Words
Dick Stoltz
Just after graduating from Vandalia Butler High School, Richard Stoltz found himself drafted into the Army and trained as a light weapons operator. He was then shipped to England, loaded onto a transport ship bound for the shores of Normandy. As a replacement, Richard found himself stepping from a landing craft onto Utah Beach, which had been secured by the first wave of men who faced unbelievable fire from the German defenders. Once on shore he was directed by Military Police off the beach and into the unknown. Richard recounts his time in the hedgerows of France, crossing the Ludendorff Bridge over the Rhine at Remagen and his time in a foxhole during the Battle of the Bulge.
