In his book: "Rough and Ready New Orleans: Volunteer Firemen Memorials," writer Kevin J. Bozant breathes new life into the memories of the men who belonged to the gallant brotherhood of one of the most important organizations in the history of New Orleans: The Volunteer Fire Department. They were dedicated members of some twenty-four fire Companies with names like Vigilant Fire Company No. 3, Creole Fire Company No. 9, and Perseverance Fire Company No. 13. They lived up to their Company mottoes such as: Always Ready, A Friend in Need, and Rough and Ready. These are the personal stories of the New Orleans firemen who voluntarily risked their own safety while protecting the lives and property of their 19th century neighbors and neighborhoods between the years 1837 and 1891-stories of courage, self-sacrifice, competition, martyrdom, celebration, bravery, comradery, and tragedy.
