In 1884, London, Chapman and Hall published the book Tonkin or France in the Far East written by Charles Boswell Norman. C. B. Normal (1846-1926) was British Army captain and writer on military matters. Born on 9 Jan 1846 in Calcutta, he joined the Bengal Staff Corps and was promoted to be Captain in Jan 1876. He provided the big picture on the dispute between France and China on Tonkin question. Not only analyzing the situation by his personal point of view, he also quoted many official papers, documents, letters and authorities' texts that brings the other side of Government of the France Republic in its political or military policies.
