Set in England and Germany from 1925, the novel charts the life and loves of Nick Farraday, as he completes university, explores relationships with the women around him and strives to become a successful author. In the background of his life throughout is the maddening, impulsive Jo, the unattainable social butterfly who dominates every period of his life.
