In the very near future, biotechnology will allow us to extend human capabilities beyond their current limits. It will be possible to eliminate hereditary diseases. Genetic engineering could increase physical strength, resistance to disease, longevity, and even intellectual abilities. Soon there will be modified human beings who will be healthier, stronger, longer-lived, and smarter than us. They will be the first of a new species: that of metahumans. What technological developments would give rise to metahumans? What would be the driving forces for the emergence of metahumanity? What would the relationship between them and us be like? Collaborative or conflictive? Would its appearance mean the extinction of the human being?This work seeks to outline answers to these and other questions based on the most recent scientific research.
