In 1972 a young family, Phillip, Susan, and their 3 year-old-son, Ethan sold all they owned and bought a 20 year old converted school bus with a 15 year old engine. Some called them hippies, even more called them "crazy." Their plan was to roam, as their whim took them (at a time before seat belts and car seats.) To get ready for their trip they added skylights, a darkroom, and painted flowers on the sides of the bus. With beautiful photographs and daily log they chronicled their trip across the American West from national forest to national park and back to national forests, the fascinating people they met along the way, the hikes along mountain streams, backpacking trips to mountain lakes, and the chronic steady decline of their bus, The Great Ship Kate.
