Of polish birth (1st March, 1810, at Zelazowa Wola, near Warsaw), Frederic CHOPIN can be considered French by adoption, (he moved to Paris at the age of twenty one years) and also by heart, Paris is the answer to all dreams and becomes for him the most beautiful of worlds. Virtuosi of the piano for which he composed nearly all his work, a celebrity within the Parisian artistic world, he becomes the friend of Liszt, Berlioz, Mendelssohn, and of the poet Heine. Rarely has the rise to fame of musician been so quick. 1836 sees the beginning of an affair with George Sand which was longer (nine years) in time, than in depth (only a few months were spent intimately) but which the writer will always enhance. After a trip to Majorca, as famed as disastrous, Sand and Chopin moved to Nohant. Their break-up followed their return to Paris in 1847. Physically exhausted by the tuberculosis which is started in Balearic Islands, Chopin died in Paris on the 17th October, 1849. Chopin had written for his favourite instrument, some of literatures most beautiful pages. He was the genius of short form. His work, of great freedom of tone well anticipated musical fashions to come, Debussy by exemple.
