Darwin came into the world with a great name and a loving family who knew absolutely, from day one, that he was a boy. He had a wonderful life with his extended circle of human and tortoise family and friends for the first few years.

It turns out that with tortoises you can't always know for certain until they're grown up. When Darwin got big enough and old enough, it turned out that he was actually a she.

Darwin worried that her whole life might change, might have to change, and even worried that worrying about it might bring about changes to how she felt about herself, and how her friends and family felt about her.
