In this story, the Philistines are the ascendant power oppressing the Israelites. A psychological metamorphosis happens in the minds of people who suffer at the hands of a cruel enemy neighbor who establishes strategic garrisons throughout the land. The domination disempowers the oppressed and replaces self-esteem with fear. Even more debilitating is the payment of taxes to the oppressors who control the metal and iron industry in Israel. If a blade needs sharpening, only the Philistine smiths have the equipment to sharpen it. The oppressing Philistines forcibly gathered slaves and conscripted strong young Israelites into the army.
