Jamal "Legs" Rae is a shy African American kid from Detroit who spends much of his time avoiding confrontation. And lately, his life as a middle schooler is getting weird. He could have sworn he morphed into a penguin, which isn't a part of puberty, last time he checked.

Once he learns about his true identity as an animal shape-shifter, he's ready to attend a secret summer program at the Academy of Therian Arts. He'll discover his mom's heroically tragic past and learn his shifting abilities are more special than anyone expected.

Meanwhile, odd animal news in the human world signals to the shifter kingdom that a dangerous underground organization is regaining power. When the group attacks the academy, Jamal will have to confront the harsh realities of evil to save his best friend and himself.
