The face is slim with an elongated snout, very decreased eyes, and ears up to 24 cm (9.5 inches) long. The aardvark's coat is scant and yellowish gray; the face and tail tip may additionally be whitish. The 4 toes on the the front foot (five on the hind feet) are outfitted with strong, flattened nail-like "hooves" reminiscent of spades.
