"Wanting to be Remembered" is a photographic history of the inspiring life and times of the Lynch Colored Public High School also known as West Main High School from 1923 to 1963. Lynch is located near Harlan County, Kentucky; it was the heart of coal country, often called Black Diamonds. This once thriving coal mining community of 10,000 people in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains; nurtured and produced tremendous individuals who have impacted the world. This book highlights the "Black Diamonds" such as the faculty, students, school workers and other key contributors of the Lynch Colored Public High School during the history of racial segregation and systemic oppression against African Americans in the United States.
It was compiled by Sam Howard Jr (Class of 1960) who is a proud native son and beneficiary of this tremendous school of education. The information collected and gathered in this book has been his mission, passion and lifelong endeavor to reveal many of the "treasured gems" of Lynch, Kentucky
