Fashion has been one of the most influential phenomena in Western civilization.since the Renaissance. It covers an increasing number of areas of activity of modern man and has come to seem almost "natural" to us. An understanding of fashion should therefore contribute to an understanding of ourselves and our way of acting. Despite this, it was practically ignored by philosophers, perhaps because it was thought that this, the most superficial of all phenomena, could hardly be a worthy object of study for such a "profound" discipline. But if philosophy is to contribute to our self-understanding, and if fashion really was-and is-as influential as I claim, it should be taken seriously as an object of inquiry.
