Born in 1914 in Trinidad, West Indies, Garth Lyder, "The Boy from Tacarigua" (a village in Trinidad) gives a lively and very personal account of his growing up in a Methodist household in a British West Indian colony. As a young teenager, he falls in love with flying aeroplanes, and over the many years of his long life, he follows his dream of becoming a pilot. In Garth's case, it is not a straight line, but rather takes him to work in an airplane factory in Bristol, then to the RAF where he becomes a pilot, is shot down and gets awarded the DFC while in a German prison camp, then through the length and breadth of Africa where he takes on passengers as a private pilot, and finally back to his native Trinidad where he serves as a commercial pilot in the newly-founded national airline, BWIA. A must-read for everybody interested in the Second World War, the RAF, or just to read about "long-time Trinidad". Garth Lyder just celebrated his 96th birthday and lives in London.
