During a 1772 incursion into Bengal's Cooch Behar, Bhutan was repelled by a well-armed Bengali force, prompting Bhutan to seek Tibetan mediation. Regent Teshoo Lama intervened with lavish gifts, leading Governor-General Warren Hastings to send George Boyle on a pivotal diplomatic mission to Tibet in 1774.
