Reading the signs : distinction-making nostalgia in swedish postwar suburbs
Maryam Fanni
This dissertation examines how 1950s nostalgia has become a tool in the urban renewal of Stockholm’s suburbs. Through an interdisciplinary approach combining design studies, urban studies, and artistic interventions, the study shows how nostalgia shapes notions of Swedishness and authenticity – and how seemingly innocent design interventions carry social and political demarcations. Maryam Fanni is a designer and researcher based in Stockholm. ”Reading the Signs – Distinction- Making Nostalgia in Swedish Postwar Suburbs” is her doctoral thesis in Design at HDK-Valand Academy of Art and Design, Gothenburg University.
