The Psalms Commentary Of Gilbert Of Poitiers Gross-Diaz

This study analyzes the contents and format of the commentary on the Psalms written by Gilbert of Poitiers around 1117 and widely copied and used later in the 12th century. The commentary is shown to have been an important contribution to the development of theology as an academic discipline. Its organization and purpose mark it out as a work of early scholasticism, in which Gilbert uses a combination of methods and elements from Patristic and Carolingian sources, liberal arts pedagogy and the pastoral and theological developments of the School of Laon. His commentary is further shown to have influenced the final form of the "Glossa Ordinaria" and the writings of Peter Lombard, and to provide important insights into the exegetical methods of the late 11th and early 12th centuries.
