Beneath the mestizo myth maintained by the State and accepted by society, there hides a racial hierarchy and structure in which different social groups have been historically marginalized and removed from their lands. In Mexico, racist ideas have received little attention in cultural studies but are often present in public. In this book, Lund analyzes this issue through the works of four Mexican writers: Luis Alva, Ignacio Manuel Altamirano, Rosario Castellanos, and Elena Garro. A través de los cuatro capítulos de El Estado mestizo descubrimos que, debajo del mito del mestizaje, sostenido por el Estado y asumido por la sociedad, se oculta una estructura marcada por una clara jerarquía racial en la que distintos grupos sociales han sido históricamente marginados y despojados de sus tierras. En México, las ideas raciales y racistas han recibido muy poca atención por parte de los estudiosos de la cultura y, sin embargo, están presentes de un modo público y notorio. En este ensayo, Lund analiza esta cuestión a través de los textos de cuatro escritores mexicanos: Luis Alva, Ignacio Manuel Altamirano, Rosario Castellanos y Elena Garro.
