Tuberculosis (TB) is a classic example of a disease with both medical and social dimensions, characterised by its close relation to poor socioeconomic conditions. The key elements in any TB control programme are -Early diagnosis and immediate initiation of treatment. The goal of RNTCP/any TB control programme is to arrest transmission of TB within the community. Achieving this goal takes considerable time, because most individuals in endemic areas are already infected, constituting a reservoir that continuously contributes to the pool of infectious cases.
