In this book, Jorge Castañeda conducts a broad study about the Mexican political system, focusing on the presidents who have held power throughout history. Throughout the pages of the book, we find interviews with presidents such as José López Portillo, Miguel de la Madrid, and Carlos Salinas. The author analyzes why they were elected and, afterward, the reasons behind why their successors were elected. The Inheritance reveals the true mechanisms of succession that govern Mexican politics, as well as why politicans strive to be elected, not at the voting booths, but by "the Great Elector."
