This book is dedicated to the memory of Henrieta Todorova and contains a foreword, a list of authors, and 34 papers of the correspondent conference at Varna, Bulgaria, from 16th to 20th May 2012. It features the 3rd Humboldt Meeting on prehistoric archaeology of the Black Sea Region after the ones of 2007 [PAS 25] and 2010 [PAS 27]. Three articles deal with phenomena of supraregional significance in a wide and partly diachronic perspective, a larger number treat the relationship between two subregions each such as Thrace / North Western Pontic, steppes / Black Sea Region, Western Pontic / Carpathian Bassin or Eastern Balkans, and Anatolia-Aegean. A third group of contributions present new results from individual sites or site clusters, e.g. Varna, Provadia, Akladicheiri or the Eneolithic cemeteries of North-Eastern Bulgaria. Two papers investigate the emergence of social inequality. The volume ends with research focussing on the Early Bronze to Iron Ages. Special aspects considered are e.g. water transport, semi-life-size clay representations of human heads, metallurgy, environmental and climatic change, tell settlements, barrows, and helmets as trophies.
