The purpose of this book is to present the issue of crime and punishment in antiquity in the wide scope of time and over an extensive geographical area. We hope that the studies included in this volume will broaden our understanding of the cross-cultural phenomenon of behaviours considered to be malevolent, dangerous to society, or corrosive to the foundations of state power, as well as the ways of punishing them, pointing also to their place in the complex organism that is human society, its culture, and traditions. A series of essays are devoted to these two sides of ancient justice in the ancient Near East, ancient Greece, and ancient Rome. This book includes essays written by historians, historians of art, historians of law, and philologists. The articles in this volume discuss different aspects of crime in the ancient cultures of Egypt, the Near East, Greece, and Rome. An issue of special interest for all authors is the social and cultural role of crime, as well as the penalisation of different criminal behaviours. Moreover, special attention is paid to different punishments and the ways of implementing them.
