The rapid increase of multimedia technology over the last decade has brought about fundamental changes to computing, entertainment, and education and it has presented our computerized society with opportunities and challenges that in many cases are unprecedented. As the use of digital multimedia increases, effective data storage and management become increasingly important. In addition, a multimedia collection or a single digital item need to be managed so that users can have an efficient access, search, browsing capabilities and effective consumption of the required data. Therefore, this book will focus on the development of efficient techniques for the browsing, indexing, retrieval, describing, defining, and analysing; in short, the "management" of the multimedia data.
