A bigger share of a woman?s income will be spent on food than a man?s, an educated woman will improve the health and increase the probability of her children getting an education more than a man. During an undergraduate course in development economics, it became so clear to me; women?s empowerment is the way to go if we want to enhance the living standards of the poorest. This is why I have written this thesis; if we improve women?s education and empower women we will improve both her and her children?s health, creating a positive spiral. As I progressed with my thesis I realized it wasn?t that simple. This thesis focuses on how women?s situation in India effects the countries development, with respect to secondary education, female labor force participation and active population growth, measuring these variables effect on Human Development Index (HDI).
