Acute Appendicitis: Clinical Diagnosis Versus Radiological Diagnosis
Saumya Mathews
The diagnosis of right lower quadrant abdominal pain has been an enigma for clinicians for centuries. Today, despite the availability of ultrasonograpy, computed tomography (CT) and diagnostic laproscopy the proportion of misdiagnosis of appendicitis as well as that of negative appendicectomy is significantly high. Appendectomy is the gold standard in the treatment of acute appendicitis. However, surgical complications cannot be discounted. The treating clinician is therefore faced with the need to balance the risk of misdiagnosis of acute appendicitis with the morbidity associated with an unnecessary surgical procedure. This study aims at revising the protocol of diagnosis of acute appendicitis.
