FORAGES are although not directly used for human consumption but they are the source of protein and fat i.e. egg, milk and other dairy products that become available to human beings through intermediaries like cattle, sheep, goats, poultry etc. Since feeding alone accounts for 60-70 % of the total cost of milk production, availability of adequate nutritious fodder coming from cheaper sources assumes greater importance. Considering the huge gap between the demand and supply of green nutritious fodder and quality dry matter along with the static or decreasing land availability, efforts at various SAUs research students were directed to intensify forage production per unit area per unit time, which can be achieved through improved high yielding varieties and better management practices. These efforts led to development of fodder crops. The judicious combination of organic and inorganic fertilizers will better maintain long term soil fertility and sustained productivity. A combination of FYM, nitrogen and biofertilizer seem to be a cheap and effective way of increasing ultimately the green fodder yield by foarge pearlmillet.
