This is one of a few books written for energyengineers and planners in designing ruralelectrification programs in Indonesia context. Thebook explains in detailed manner the steps andprocedures to identify, design, and analyze thelocally-available energy resources to meet thereliable, affordable and sustainable power supplydemand for remote locations not connected to anyutility grid. Emphasizes were given to harness solarenergy, hydro-kinetic power from rivers, andpalm-biodiesel fuel for diesel generators, which areapplicable in numerous rural areas of Indonesia. TheHOMER simulation program was used as a technicaldesign tool. It also used to analyze the economicaland environmental aspects of the project. The I3Aframework proposed by Retnanestri (2007) was adoptedas a general criteria to enhance the sustainabilityof rural electrification programs in Indonesia. Although this book was based on the Riau Provincesituation, most of the procedures used here areapplicable for many rural areas of developing countries.
