The paucity of the historical record confounds the efficient probabilistic characterization of storm surge hazards. This book presents efficient parametric and nonparametric simulation techniques for evaluating the frequency-of-occurrence of storm surge hazards under stationary and non-stationary climate scenarios. Given the prohibitive computational requirements of state-of-the-art basin-scale hydrodynamic simulations, the effective implementation of a stochastic simulation framework requires the introduction of a new paradigm: optimal function recovery, rather than repeated direct hydrodynamic simulations, via sparse grid-supported multivariate regression functions. The methods presented in the book are directly applicable to other multi-parameter hazards such as earthquakes and riverine floods.
