Late Laxman Mohanty
Growth opportunities stimulated by economic liberalization and the process of globalization have created demand for higher education in India. Leading to an increase in the need for infrastructure, finance, human and informational resources in institutions of higher learning. Thus resource mobilization (RM) becomes a key aspect for survival and growth of technical institutions. A study was carried out to explore RM efforts and understand various dimensions related to RM. Based on field visits, primary and secondary sources, the study examined resource mobilization efforts of 16 engineering colleges in India. The data collected were analyzed to indentify enablers, threats, drivers and constraints for RM efforts. Best practices in resource mobilization efforts were documented. Several innovative practices such as professional outfit for research, dual degree programs, informal courses, for profit setup for consultancy and workshop as profit center etc were being practiced. It was found that the institutions studied did not have a comprehensive RM strategy. Educational institutions in general can benefit from the findings in this study.
