Researchers have been calling for more research in the area of HIV prevention that focuses on male sexuality, and pointed out that little is known about the reasons for men engaging in less healthy lifestyles than women. This book aimed,to answer this call by exploring the ways in which a group of young adult, sexually active, heterosexual, Xhosa speaking males construct their sexuality, masculinity and the sexual behaviours that have been identified in previous research as significantly increasing the risk of HIV transmission. The book's discussion proceeds from examining constructions of masculine sexuality, masculinity and high risk sexual behaviours, to an exploration of the possible relationships between these and an understanding of HIV/AIDS as a gendered disease.
