In education, we know that one of the key variables that impacts instruction is the relationship between students and teachers. This book, however, looks at the relationship that exists between students and their parents and between the parents and the school. Dr. Rodríguez researched nine families to discover how they relate to their children and how the parents pass along their own educational values to their sons and daughters. Three groups of families were represented: families whose home language was English, families whose home language was Spanish, and families who spoke both languages to varying degrees at home. Nine families were selected from a group of academically high-achieving Dual Language students attending an urban elementary school in Houston, Texas. Findings suggest commonalities in educational values among the three groups regardless of home language and despite significant differences in the educational experiences and opportunities of the parents.
