English summary: The Early Modern Period in Europe is considered a particularly warlike period. That is not to say it was as martial as the Middle Ages but there were changes in the ideology, social, technical and cultural meaning of war during this period: the legitimation of war in the Early Modern Period became increasingly arbitrary while at the same time, the weapons technology and payment system of working army soldiers dissolved the old estate-based hierarchy and their associated practical manuals. This self-reproducing "bellicosity" required new strategies of legitimation and de-legitimation of war in the literature of the Early Modern Period, which are the focus of the articles in this anthology.
