Much of this large volume comprises beautiful colour and black and white photographs of some of the finest Italian sculptures created between the middle of the 13th century and the end of the 14th century. The photographs are followed by lengthy descriptions of each work as well as biographies of the 35 sculptors represented, including Nicola Pisano, Orcagna, Nanno di Bartolo and Bartolomeo Buon. The introduction discusses the nature of Gothic sculpture in Italy, the influence of antiquity, and the lives of artists and their patrons.
