Der erste Band des Handbuchs betritt wissenschaftliches Neuland: Er zeigt erstmals, wie sich Neuansatze auf sehr verschiedenen Gebieten allmahlich zur Volksaufklarung bundelten. Die in ihrer Mehrzahl heute noch erreichbaren Titel sind aufgrund von Autopsie dokumentiert. Wie alle weiteren Teilbande enthalt er eine ausfuhrliche einleitende Darstellung. Damit entsteht nicht nur eine Bibliographie mit Standortnachweisen, sondern zugleich ein erster Literaturfuhrer durch dieses bisher schwer zugangliche Gebiet. The first volume of the handbook has broken new scholarly ground. For the first time, it shows how new approaches in very different areas gradually focused on popular Enlightenment. Most of these titles, which are still available today, are documented based on personal inspection. As all other volumes of this set, it contains a detailed introduction. This means that there is not only a bibliography with the localization of documents but also at the same time an initial literary guide to this area, which was previously almost inaccessible.
