Cast Iron Filings and Clay
Okewu Ebute Jonathan
According to Jonathan, decorating ceramics is one of the most rewarding aspects of working in clay. It is the time when you can add colour and life to a bare clay surface that can show off once creative talents. Making difference in his chosen area of specialisation and to stand out among others, Jonathan chose to add iron fillings to clay to achieve unique and decorative effects. Cast iron fillings from the process of reconditioning engine blocks were introduced in clay body to add uniqueness to the body in form of speckle effects and also to reduce the shrinkage rate of the same clay body. These were achieved by scientifically and artistically engaging the materials to accomplish his aim.
