Recreation is the refreshment of the mind and body after work, especially by engaging in enjoyable activities. This is an activity that a person takes part in for pleasure or relaxation rather than as work. The trend in how people spend their time changes per time but contains broadly the same ingredients: a chance to escape from the city, to be alone with one self or with loved ones, to be close to nature, to relax, to engage in revitalizing and refreshing activities, and to enjoy oneself. The modern concept of recreation centers (urban park) started in the early 19th century, during the industrial revolution in the western world. In most Nigerian built environment however, as in many third world developing cities, we are faced with acute shortage of quality spaces for recreation. Inadequate provisions of open spaces or landscaped areas contribute to the observed aggravated environmental, social, health, and psychological problems in many communities and urban areas. There is an innate desire to achieve certain goals and desires in every human which drives the need for recreation.
