The book presents Vector Quantization based video compression technique which achieves Compression by eliminating the spatial redundancy. Compression of video file means eliminating the redundancies and irrelevancies which exist between the video frames. Such redundancies are Temporal and Spatial. Temporal redundancy is eliminated by using Motion Estimation Technique. Further, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 use the ME strategy. Spatial redundancy is reduced by Using VQ method. The latest technique belongs to the category of VQ based video compression. Generally, VQ involves designing of better codebook because compression ratio is dependent upon it. VQ techniques are divided into two main categories; efficient codebook design and fast codebook Generation. The most famous VQ algorithm is LBG which is used to generate codebook but can be trapped in local optima which degrades the video quality after decoding. Heuristics techniques are more suitable for achieving the global optima but they need initial Solution and require large computation time.
