The Indian Muggers of Kurukshetra
Chander Shekhar
This book is the result the research of 27 years of the author on Indian Mugger, Crocodylus palustris. At present there are 22 living species of Crocodilians in the world belonging to three families Crocodilidae, Alligatoridae and Gavialidae. The three species of crocodilians in India are the mugger or marsh crocodile (Crocodylus palustris), the salt water or estuarine crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) and the gharials (Gavialis gangeticus). Of these three Indian crocodilian species, the marsh mugger Crocodylus palustris, the subject of present study, is closely associated with the Indian mythology and local myths of many groups and tribes of people in India. I believe that this book would be of immense help to the students as well as researchers of wildlife. It will add to the knowledge of general public regarding these denizens of nature and will remove the myths associated with the muggers.
