Microscope: [Greek: (micron)= small + (skopein) = to look at]. Enables us to view small objects by magnification of it?s image. An optical instrument that is used to observe tiny objects often that cannot be seen at all with the unaided human eye. The first useful microscope was developed in the Netherlands between 1590 and 1608. Anton van Leeuwenhoek (1632-1723) is the father of microscopy. He was the first person to describe bacteria (from teeth scrapings), protozoans (from pond water), helped to prove the theory of blood circulation. He gained much of his inspiration form reading Robert Hooke's Micrographia. Robert Hooke re-confirmed Anton van Leeuwenhoek's discoveries of the existence of tiny living organisms in a drop of water. The first to record small living organism from plaque in his mouth.
