Home-based Industries: Impact on Housing in Meerut City, India Iram Aziz

Home- based industries in India are small scale enterprises, labour intensive and capital saving in nature. They are a solution generated by opportunity deprived (poor or uneducated) families for their living, and sometimes are an important instrument for the growth in the city, like Mumbai, Ludhiana and various other Indian cities, including Meerut of Uttar Pradesh. In Meerut city, HBI proves that a house is not only for residential purpose only but also serves as a production place and market place. Both home and community derive vitality from the multiplicity of uses. In this book, an attempt has been made to develop a strategy on the basis of the problems identified and the existing situation. The findings of the study have revealed that the problems of the users/ inhabitants are multidimensional that cannot be isolated in terms of housing or economics alone. An interesting read for the Town Planners, Architects and Sociologists who think that planning framework and standards must result in affordable and sustainable housing for HBIs.
