Malawi got independence from the British colonial rulers in 1963. One Dr Hastings Kamuzu Banda, a British and American Scholar lived overseas for 40years returned to Malawi in 1958 to fight the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland. He ruled the country up to 1994, when Multiparty crept in. Dr Muluzi came to power in 1994-2004 when his government amidst striving to facelift the country, it was marred with massive corruption and bad governance. One Chakufwa Chihana, a Unionist together with Bakili Muluzi fought for Democracy in Malawi. Between 2004-April 2012, Professor Bingu wa Mutharika assumed power on a UDF ticket. He immediately dumped the party to form his own DPP. Although with various challenges he did several developmental infrastructures. A known economist failed to live to his expectations as economic malaise crept in. He eventually collapsed of Heart-failure while on duty and passed on. Lady Dr Joyce Banda who was ostracised by Bingu as his Vice President took the Mantle on 7th April 2012 and she is now faced with general elections to mandate of her own term on 20th May 2014.
