Evaluation of Advanced Hybrids of Two Solanum Species
Peter Ejimofor Ogbonna
The growers of tomato in south eastern Nigeria has experienced very poor yields and sometimes total crop failure and loss of investment due to the poor adaptation of the available tomato varieties to high humid conditions. The ability to tolerate these conditions and the associated diseases is an interesting genetic characteristics of the Solanum pimpinellifolium that had been exploited in the breeding program that produced the hybrids that were evaluated. Some of the hybrids distinguished themselves as genotypes with high fruit weight and better yield stability across the four seasons of evaluation.
