A Curious Adverbial Construction: the Interface Between Syntax and Interpretation
Ziva Wijler
This book ideals with a curious adverbial construction found in Modern Hebrew. The adverbs under consideration are mostly positioned before the verb, but they also show after the verb immediately preceding an argument. I argue that the semantics of the adverbs in the two configurations is distinct, though on first observation it looks that the semantics of the adverbs in the two configurations is identical. In order to account for the semantic difference, I will propose that the two configurations present two distinct syntactic structures, and the semantic distinctions arise compositionally. This supports the theory of compositionality in adverb grammar.
