All our body organs are not like the brain, heart or the lungs. Something is also there which we wear on the otside. Skin is our largest organ?adults carry some 8 pounds (3.6 kilograms) and 22 square feet (2 square meters) of it. This fleshy covering does a lot more than make us look presentable. Its ability to maintain applied preparation intact for a prolonged time have resulted in its increased use as a route of administration whether for local, regional or systemic effects. Gels are better percutaneously absorbed than cream or ointment bases. Itraconazole is a broad spectrum triazole anti-fungal used to contol the prophylaxis of fungal infections in immunocompromised patients. The major drawback of this drug is that it is practically insoluble in water. Solid dispersions have been widely reported as an effective method for enhancing the solubility and dissolution rate. Hence, in the present research work we have successfully developed solid dispersion incorporated gels of Itraconazole to overcome solubility and thus the bioavailability. This book, therefore be useful to those research scholars who are willing to work on gel based formulations.
